This is a split release between two vastly different post-industrial artists. Different State's offerings initially seem like another kitchen sink attempt, but certain commonalities can be detected amongst their varied offerings. Firstly, whether it is the old-school inspired industrial of the opener or the dark ambient leanings of "Nose", the songs maintain a hypnotic simplicity that anchors what would could otherwise be a pastiche of experimental desperation.

The album is dedicated to the famed 19th century magickian Austin Osman Spare, and I have a feeling this is primarily Sigill's doing. Not that Different State does not have an occult air, but it is much more pronounced with Sigill, ritual ambient libations are provided with overt magickal titles. (He even provides what I assume is a list of personal magickal correspondences. The air is thick with occultism -- not hoary chestnuts gleamed from a few LaVey publications, but that of deeper understanding.)

Overall, Sigill provides the superior work, with a ritual atmosphere that will appeal to those who appreciate the work of the Finnish Helixes collective, whilst Different State is a bit of a hit and miss affair. Personally, I would buy it just for Sigill's amazing occult atmospheres.
